New Boats! Usage Policy HERE!

CRI has some more new sculling boats!  Last year, we introduced eight new Alden’s to the fleet, along with four sets of new blades.  This year we have FOUR NEW SINGLES and FOUR NEW DOUBLES from Vespoli along with six sets of new blades that are either here now or on the way!  VERY VERY EXCITING!
After wide ranging input from a broad cross section of the community, this is what the CRI Board learned through the discussion to date:
#1 - we should use the new boats as an opportunity not to change our standards - we already have the most rigorous Captain’s Test on the River -  but to increase the communication bandwidth between scullers and people who maintain equipment
#2 - new rowing shells are for EVERYONE, competitive or not.  The test to use the equipment isn’t speed, it is care and respect for the equipment.
To that end, we have a special requirement to row the new boats:
#1 - only people who are Captain’s Tested can use the new boats.  One exception - if there are insufficient shells for Sculling 4, a coach may reserve them.
#2 - to use the new boats, your name must appear on a list maintained by Seth.  To get your name on the list, you must talk with Seth and go through a refresher course on boat handling and procedures.  You must also contribute $10 to the maintenance fund at CRI.  Seth may waive the fee at his discretion.

Credit Card Processing - BACK ONLINE!

The temporary credit card processing issue has been resolved - we apologize for any inconvenience that it has caused.  The issue emerged because of an upgrade in our form collection software - we were issued a new transaction key and the system continues to operate with the highest possible level of security.  CRI uses Authorize.net for all on-line credit card processing because of their industry standard security and robust transaction interface.

John Horgan writes about Adaptive Training with Igor Burdenko

ADAPTIVE ROWERS FROM COMMUNITY ROWING, INC.  PARTICIPATE IN DR.                                                      IGOR BURDENKO’S WATER BASED EXERCISE PROGRAM SESSION

On June 22, 2010 three adaptive rowers enrolled in Dr. Igor Burdenko’s strength class-Jason Fowler, Dave Estrada, and John Horgan-met for their second training session of the “Burdenko Method.”  This session was held at the Waltham Boston Sports Club’s therapy pool.

Prior to descending into the pool, Dr. Burdenko introduced the three participants to the equipment that is used in the water phase of Dr. Burdenko’s strength training program.  First, each adaptive rower was fitted with a “Wet Vest”.  The wet vest is an important and critical tool of the water segment of the “Burdenko Method.”  The vest is a flotation device designed for aquatic exercises and rehabilitation programs.  A person puts the wet vest on over the head, somewhat like putting on football shoulder pads, which is then velcroed closed across the rib and abdomen area of person’s body.   The “tail” of the wet vest, located on the bottom of the vest, is velcroed to the front of the vest under the groin area by a Velcro strap.

Secured in the wet vest, the adaptive rowers were then introduced to the equipment Dr. Burdenko uses in his water based strength training programs.  First, hand bars are used as floatation devices on top of the water and for muscle resistance when submerged below the water.  Next, swim/therapy bars are 30 inch versions of the hand bars and provide stability and buoyancy, as well as exercise resistance.

The first exercise Dr. Burdenko introduced to the program participants was what he described as “Walking.”  In a sitting position while floating in the water with a straight back, the participants were encouraged to paddle with their hands and arms in a bobbing motion and float, “walk,” from one side of the pool to the other.  Next, Dr. Burdenko illustrated the “Side Stretch,” an exercise that simulates the land mat stretching exercise where a  person lies one side of their body and extends a  hand bar straight out in front of the person’s  body while at the same time extending hand bar down past the waist of the person while floating on their side.  Dr. Burdenko then showed the group how to do hand bar pushdowns.

The final exercise that ended the training session that day had Dr. Burdenko demonstrating the proper use of the swim therapy bars to the three participants.

Adult Women's Race

Dr. Steven Victorson EdD.

Everyone is Welcome!

Community Rowing is very happy to welcome Vespoli, a manufacturer of world class rowing equipment, as the Title Sponsor for the Monthly Rowing Education Series.  These events, held on the second Tuesday of every month at Community Rowing Inc, provide a forum for coaches and rowers to learn from experts in all fields that have an impact on performance in rowing.

The Vespoli Coaching Education Series at Community Rowing is pleased to host Steven Victorson with his presentation on “How to Win” The talk will begin at 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 10th followed by time for questions and discussion along with snacks and refreshments afterwards.

Dr. Steven Victorson, EdD. has for the past 30 years helped individuals with sports conditioning, general fitness training and rehabilitative exercise. He has a doctorate in Human Movement from Boston University, a Masters of Science and Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education from Cal State Hayward and is Master Certified in the Burdenko Method. From 1987-1991 he was the conditioning coach for the men’s U.S. Alpine Ski Team. Dr. Victorson’s knowledge comes from a lifetime of experience as a student, teacher, coach and health and fitness expert.

His vision is to introduce and educate individuals to the benefits of including Water Training as part of their personal fitness routine. He has experienced great success and satisfaction designing health and fitness programs that include Water Training. His programs have helped Olympic and World Champions, professional tennis players, figure skaters, ballet dancers, NBA players, along with state and national champion high school athletes, master’s athletes, and large numbers of individuals seeking various levels of general health and conditioning specific fitness goals.

In addition to benefiting those in search of athletic fitness and general health and fitness, Dr. Victorson’s programs have also proven very effective in helping individuals with orthopedic injuries, arthritis, hip and knee replacement as well as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and Parkinson’s. His clients come from all fitness levels and range in age from 8-84.

Presently, Dr. Victorson is working on two books, to be published in 2009: The Champion’s Way, segments of which will also be available in e-book format; and SwymFit: Water and Land Conditioning For Complete Fitness. The Champion’s Way is based on the dissertation Dr. Victorson wrote to complete his EdD. SwymFit covers the programs and benefits familiar to everyone who visits SwymFit, while also showcasing the way water fitness, training and conditioning works in a cross-training role with land-based practices.

The coaching education series at CRI’s Harry Parker Boathouse will present a different speaker and topic on the second Tuesday each month. The series is sponsored by Vespoli.
