CRI is pausing programming and operations at the boathouse for the coming week starting Monday January 3. There are a number of reasons for this brief pause that center around holiday travel and/or participation in group or community events as part of the holiday season. Coupled with the rise in transmissibility of the virus and general lack of available testing, we want to give our community and health authorities needed time to understand the impact of the holidays on transmission.
Wednesday, December 29, 10:15AM
In lieu of the most recent increases in COVID spread, CRI will make an announcement on Friday, December 31 regarding re-opening requirements for programming starting Sunday January 2.
See below for the summary of guidelines regarding proof of vaccination and close contacts.

COVID PROOF OF VACCINATION: Guideline Update and Timeline
Guideline Update
- The City of Boston announced on December 20 that starting on January 15, 2022, our community will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to enter all our indoor spaces at the Harry Parker Boathouse.
- For all of us, this guideline includes all indoor spaces - upstairs and downstairs, including the boat bays. Though our boat bays meet the criteria of an outdoor space as defined by the City of Boston, CRI will enforce the vax policy in the bays for continuity and consistency.
For Participants Registered in any Winter Program at CRI
- Between Monday Jan 3 and Friday, Jan 14 - we will ask our registered winter participants to affirm proof of vaccination with your coach:
- In the spirit that many hands make light work of a big job, we will share the winter rosters (“vaccination rosters”) with each coach of current programs before Jan 3 who will ask you at practices between Jan 3 and Jan 14 to affirm your vaccination status.
- Coaches must affirm proof of vaccination for each individual on their “vax roster” and return it to CRI on/before Jan 15 - please help them by sharing your vaccination status when asked.
- This is a one-time check for registered participants in our programs - once participants have affirmed their proof of vaccination, they will not need to reaffirm proof of vaccination until/unless the same is required for spring programs.
- For a list of what may be shown as proof of vaccination, see this page. Please bring your proof of vaccination with you to your program to show to your coach; do not share paper or electronic copies of your vaccination card with CRI.
For individual participants, volunteers and/or visitors to the Harry Parker Boathouse
- For individual participants, visitors, or anyone else entering the boathouse for longer than a quick visit, proof of vaccination will be required upon entrance for every visit.
- Please be prepared to share your proof of vaccination and government issued ID to a member of our front desk staff.
- For those who are making a “quick visit’ (e.g., package/mail dropoff, first floor bathroom visit), the City of Boston guidance currently indicates that these visits do not require proof of vaccination for entrance, however masking continues to be required in order to enter the building.

UPDATED HOURS:
CRI will continue to honor the City of Boston public health advisory for non-essential businesses and will open at 6AM starting June 1.
Wednesday, May, 27. Next Update, no later than Friday May 29
We are excited to open our doors next Monday on a limited basis and return to the Charles River. Since the Governor outlined a phased approach to reopening the Massachusetts economy, we have developed a safe and effective plan to enable our community to begin its return to the Harry Parker Boathouse and to the greater river community.
Our initial opening will continue to be coordinated with state and health officials, and as such will begin on an individual basis for non-coached, non-group programming in single sculls only. As our society hopefully progresses beyond Phase 1 safely, we will evaluate the opportunity to expand our offerings and begin coached programs and small group classes.
Highlights of major changes to rowing at CRI
- Masks must be worn at all times on the grounds and docks
- 2 Step Check in Process to certify our rowers are collectively safe and can practice social distancing at CRI
- We have made considerable investment in new processes to clean and disinfect equipment and our facilities
- Many smaller, meaningful changes to ensure we can keep our community safe and healthy as we cautiously return to operations.
UPDATE: Saturday, May 23. 4:30PM
Preparing for the JUNE 1 opening of CRI
We are both excited and equally cautious in our approach to conservatively resuming our operations at the Harry Parker Boathouse. Getting back on the water will demand our collective patience, common sense, and personal responsibility to ensure that we keep each other safe and enable CRI to continue to serve our community.
Additional information, protocols and procedures that will guide us through our return to the boathouse will be forthcoming.
WHAT WILL OPEN, Monday June 1
- Somerville Sculling Pavillion: Weekdays: 5am to 7pm; Weekends: 6am to 11am. Logbook and Private Boat sculling only
- Harry Parker Boathouse: First floor bathrooms only. Front Desk, Coaches Office, and Admin Offices will remain closed.
UPDATE: Tuesday, May 19. 9:00AM
CRI Phased Reopening Plan
In preparation for reopening, CRI has prepared a phased opening plan that abides by state and federal guidelines as well as health and safety recommendations. On Monday, May 18, the state announced its phased approach to the easing of social restrictions while providing guidance on health and safety. The state also provided guidance and policies associated with this phased reopening plan and we are incorporating into our current plans.
To ensure the health and safety of our community, CRI has established strict cleaning, social distancing protocols and made considerable changes to our general operations/functioning. New guidance that incorporates the state’s phased approach will be shared shortly through email communications and this web page.
Our current phased reopening plan begins on June 1 when we will partially reopen the building and welcome some staff and rowers on a restricted schedule back to the Harry Parker Boathouse.
Our current plan is to manage a soft opening that includes:
- Logbook sculling and private boats welcomed to the boathouse on June 1 as a pilot to new operations and a “sculling only” programming schedule
- No coaching or coached programs will be conducted - coached sessions will begin during Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan
- The building will remain closed until June 1 in accordance with state guidelines
Look for more information and updates coming throughout the week of May 18 and 25. We look forward to seeing you soon at the Harry Parker Boathouse soon!
UPDATE: Monday, May 18. 9:30AM
We expect further direction and clarification of CRI's approach to opening for on-water operations after Governor Baker's statements this week. We will evaluate the Governors direction on an ongoing basis and will share more information related to opening as we determine it.
We do know now that when CRI opens we will offer rowing opportunities, that will be:

- No more than eight (8) people will be scheduled to row at a time at CRI on a minimum of 30 minute centers/increments

In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to come together and support one another. CRI plays an integral role in the life of our community and we intend to continue to support our staff as they have supported us as well as provide everyone who embraces us the opporunity to learn and grow through resilience, cooperation and inclusion. We will continue to asses this situation on a day-by-day, case-by-case basis.

UPDATE 2:00pm Friday March 6, 2020:
We had scheduled sending a message to our community today at noon regarding our response to Covid -19 but learned of the one additional case discovered in Wellesley earlier in the day:
-
As mentioned the Coronavirus outbreak is a rapidly evolving situation that will require consistent and regular communication
-
Since learning of the Wellesley case, we are in regular touch with the State Department of Health and local medical professionals and we are continuing to follow their suggested guidelines
-
We may send updates coming to coaches/staff/teams as we continue to monitor and react to current events
-
Please review the main content of our message below
Yesterday, CRI issued its second update regarding the coronavirus and its impact on our community. We will continue to follow the most up-to-date guidance and procedures from public health officials, assessing conditions assure our community but also open a direct line of communication to me if there are questions or concerns.
UPDATE, March 5, 2020:
As stated in our initial update, CRI will continue to follow the most up-to-date guidance and procedures from public health officials, assessing conditions on an ongoing basis.
New Guidance from the CDC:
- 14-Day self-quarantine for travelers returning from China and Iran, Italy, South Korea
- This means that individuals who have traveled to any of these countries should self-quarantine for 14 days upon their return to the U.S. and notify their doctor if they become sick.
- The CDC also recommends that travelers returning from Japan limit contact with others and self-monitor for symptoms.
Information Regarding Self-Quarantine
- If you are sick: Stay home until you feel better, and contact your doctor if you are concerned you may have been exposed to this illness.
- Please do your best to share factual information, and avoid speculation and rumor. The CDC has also issued guidance aimed at reducing stigma and bias
- During a time of anxiety and fear, it is especially important to offer one another respect, support and compassion.
Decision-Making Around CRI Closures
We have received some questions about the potential need for closure. Because CRI is such an interconnected organization with children from multiple school districts and adults from a broad geography (and travel itineraries), decisions about closure will be quite complex.
CRI will make decisions about closure on a case-by-case, day-by-day basis. We recognize that closing CRI has repercussions for wellbeing of our families and their safety. These concerns will be taken into consideration in any decision-making.
If directives from public health officials change, we will notify you as soon as possible.
Continued Preparedness Planning
CRI Leadership is actively working on plans and contingency plans, and encourage members of the community to contribute to these efforts by making your own plans for coping with the potential of disruption to schools and our community. We will do our best to support and inform our community -- and we are all going to need to pull together in this spirit.
Please report any health concerns to Ted Benford - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
As always, medical questions and concerns should be brought to medical professionals, your own doctor, or the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at 617.983.6800.
UPDATE: Tuesday, March 3, 2020:
Your safety and health is our number one priority. The coronavirus outbreak is a rapidly changing situation so we will update this page regularly and will update our community in the e-news as relevant, new information becomes available. We believe communication and engagement by our community is key - please join us to ensure the health and safety of our rowers and staff alike.
It appears that people at greatest risk for severe illness includes older adults (over age 60) and those with underlying health conditions. Infection in healthy children and teenagers has been rare and the vast majority of cases have been mild.
To learn more, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) FACT SHEET ON CHILDREN AND COVID-19
1 - Adding sanitization in key places
This includes adding disinfecting wipes, additional pump bottles of hand sanitizer and adding stands in public places for your hands
2 - Equipping cleaning stations with additional towels and cleaning solution bottles.
The solution in our cleaning bottles is highly effective at destroying germs
3 - Setting even more vigilant cleaning expectations for our cleaning staff
This includes adding disposable towels in bathrooms/lockers, more frequent cleaning of surfaces and more.
4 - Updating and redistributing hand-washing reminders throughout CRI.
We’ve had signs up for about three weeks, so we’ll refresh them.
Four things you can do to help protect yourself and others:
1 - Please do not come to CRI if you are not feeling well
If you have a cough, or a fever, or shortness of breath, we ask that you recover away the boathouse.
2 – Regularly wash your hands
Good hand washing practice involves wetting your hands, washing them for at least 20 seconds, rinsing and then drying.
For a refresher – here are easy steps to ensure you are reducing germs on your hands.
3 – Cough / Sneeze into your Elbow
When you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue (not with your hands).
4 - Practice HEALTHY HANDLE HYGIENE
We suggest our athletes wipe handles and bars down prior to training and then afterward as well. The additional wipe downs, along with the increase of attention from our cleaning staff, will help to drastically limit the chance for germ transmission.
The current threat for the virus in Massachusetts is low. We will continue to follow suggestions from our local trusted organizations, the Massachusetts Department of Health and the CDC as this situation evolves.
